Chaz Davies wins WorldSBK Race 1 astride his Ducati in Germany ahead of the Kawasakis ridden by Rea and Sykes; the Pirelli solutions contribute to breaking the track records with Tom Sykes

On the rear, all the riders opt for medium hardness compound solutions except for the Kawasaki Racing Team riders who choose the soft tyre, in Superpole® Tom Sykes improves on the track record by almost two seconds

Klettwitz (Germany), 19 August 2017 – On the German EuroSpeedWay Lausitz circuit, Ducati rider Chaz Davies has just won Race 1 in the MOTUL FIM World Superbike Championship, successfully crossing the finish line first ahead of the Kawasakis ridden by Jonathan Rea and Tom Sykes. With this win, his fifth of the season, the Welsh rider for team Aruba.it Racing – Ducati tightens his grip on third place in the overall standings, closing the gap behind Championship leader Jonathan Rea to 110 points, but more importantly, reducing the distance that separates Ducati from Kawasaki in the Manufacturer Standings to just 61 points.

In any case, the manufacturer from Akashi certainly had nothing to be ashamed of, with their riders finishing second and third and with Tom Sykes breaking the track records. Thanks in part to the progress made by Pirelli this year, the English rider took Superpole® setting a new time record of 1’36.121 and improving on the previous track record he himself had set last year by almost two seconds. As if that were not enough, Sykes also set the new race lap record with a time of 1’36.918. It should be pointed out that, thanks to the performance of the new Pirelli qualifying tyres, eleven riders were able to break last year's record in Superpole®.

In Race 1, most of the riders chose medium compound solutions for the rear, with the exception of the Kawasaki Racing Team riders who, despite less than ideal asphalt temperatures, chose to mount the soft solution. Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team) started well from pole position, but Chaz Davies (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati), who had not been able to do better than sixth place on the grid yesterday in Superpole®, moved in behind him straight away. The Welshman was very aggressive and already in the second lap, he managed to take the lead from the English rider on the 'Made in Akashi' bike. In the meantime, Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team) also overtook his teammate, setting out to chase down the Ducati rider. In fourth position it was the other Ducati rider, Italian Marco Melandri, whereas Lorenzo Savadori (Milwaukee Aprilia) who had started from the third spot on the grid, slipped back to seventh place.
Chaz Davies tried to widen the gap at the front straight away, but Rea and Sykes on their Kawasaki machines did not let him get away, nipping at the Welshman's heels just three tenths of a second behind him.
In the meantime, on the eleventh lap, Davide Giugliano (making his début on the Honda that had been ridden by the late Nicky Hayden), was forced to retire due to a technical problem.
In the second part of the race, there were various upsets and passes in the lower part of the grid, but no particularly exciting moves between the riders in the top spots. Rea and Sykes never managed to be a real threat to Chaz Davies and he managed to finish first with an advantage of almost two seconds over reigning World Champion Jonathan Rea and more than three ahead of pole man Tom Sykes. Teammate Marco Melandri finished fourth.

The Pirelli solutions chosen by the WorldSBK riders for Race 1:

In Race 1, especially for the rear, the riders' choices were very similar. The most popular solution was the W0051 SC1 development tyre (option B) that the riders had already been able to try during the Motorland Aragón and Assen rounds. This tyre was used by seventeen out of the twenty-two riders on the starting grid. The other solution in medium compound, the V1199 (option C) was chosen only by Raffaele de Rosa, whereas four riders, including Kawasaki riders Tom Sykes and Jonathan Rea, opted for the W0575 SC0 development solution (option A) that had already been seen in action at Laguna Seca, despite temperatures that were not exactly ideal for this solution.
As for the front, the most popular tyre was the V0952 SC1 development solution (option C), followed by the standard SC1 (option B) and the new W0657 SC1 development tyre (option A).
