Dirk von Zitzewitz Wins the Two-Cylinder Class with Africa Twin 1000 RR and Comes Second Overall

When it comes to motor sports, Touratech's motto is "There’s no way of testing harder". #touratech has been involved in two-wheeled off-road sports since 2002. It all began when the company participated in the legendary Dakar Rally, while the most recent project was starting on a #honda CRF 1000L at the "Hellas Rally" in May 2016, an event that ended in a sensation.

The objective behind Touratech’s participation in this rally was to test various prototypes for the latest Africa Twin. The focus was on protection and comfort, and above all on the brand new #touratech Suspension shock for the #honda #enduro.

This year's #hellasrally was held on Greece's second-largest island of Evia, and the 168 starters from 14 countries bore witness to its tremendous international popularity. In addition to the numerous amateurs, various works teams also used the event for test purposes, including the KTM works pilot and second in the Dakar 2016, Stefan Svitko.

Touratech #racing started with rally ace and Dakar champion Dirk von Zitzewitz in the M5 class, a category purely for two-cylinders that is no longer seen at many rallies. From day one, von Zitzewitz was able to gain first place on the Africa Twin 1000 RR in the two-cylinder class. In the overall ranking, #touratech #racing in 12th place was close to the Top Ten.

Over the six days of the race, it came to heated exchanges between #touratech rider Dirk von Zitzewitz and Italian Ugo Filosa, also on an Africa Twin. The numerous very tight sections of the route, which also included plenty of changes in direction, made navigating by Roadbook extremely challenging for the riders. In comparison with the much lighter sports enduros that made up 90 percent of the starting field, the big enduros had a tremendous handicap with regard to weight and handling.

Over the course of the race, Dirk von Zitzewitz was increasingly able to make the most of his years of navigating experience gained on his Dakar rides. The excellent service provided by the no less experienced #touratech crew and the terrific #touratech Suspension together managed to achieve the unbelievable: on day four of the race, the #touratech team with the big #honda adventure bike made it to third place overall.

The motto on the last two days of the race were keep your nerves, keep the bike in the best possible condition, and keep your fingers crossed.  None of the #touratech team would have even dreamt of coming first, second or third in an international rally on such a heavy bike.

However, the best was yet to come. The end result was an absolute sensation: an uncontested start-to-finish win ahead of Ugo Filosa (Honda CRF 1000 L) in the two-cylinder category, and an unbelievable second place behind Gerard Farres (KTM 450 Rally) in the overall ranking.

"At the beginning of the event, I would have been delighted with a place among the first ten. I never imagined that I would be this far forward in this starting field," Dirk von Zitzewitz voiced his delight at this amazing result.
