StatAttack: The sprint to the finish in the 2016 Formula 1 season continues apace. Just five days after the chequered flag was waved at the Malaysian Grand Prix, free practice for the next race in Japan gets underway on Friday. Since the start of the Hybrid Power Unit era in the 2014 season, Suzuka has been a happy hunting ground for the Silver Arrows: one-two victories on both occasions, two pole positions, two front row lockouts and two fastest laps. Both victories in the last two years went to Lewis Hamilton who has won no fewer than three times on the figure-of-eight Formula 1 circuit. By contrast, the last two pole positions were set by his team‑mate Nico Rosberg.
Welcome to Malaysia: A varied programme was laid on in the week before the Malaysian Grand Prix. The whole country and title partners Petronas greeted Formula 1 with two days of exciting activities. For example, the two Silver Arrow drivers paid a surprise visit to staff in the Petronas Towers, met hundreds of fans in the KLCC Mall, challenged customers to a pit stop competition at a Petronas service station and helped children working on a very special Formula 1 project.

Double Champions: A successful end to the Blancpain GT Series season for #mercedesamg: in the final round of the 2016 Blancpain GT Series Sprint Cup at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, Dominik Baumann and Maximilian Buhk secured the title in the Blancpain GT Series drivers’ standings. With sixth place in the qualifying race and eighth place in the main race, they also sealed the title win for AMG-Team HTP Motorsport in the teams’ standings. “Nevertheless, we can’t be fully satisfied with eighth place in a main race that was very difficult for us,” said Maximilian Buhk. „However, what counts, is the title in the Blancpain GT Series drivers’ and teams’ standings,” added Dominik Baumann. „We are really happy for the team.“
Debut victory in Barcelona: DTM rookie Felix Rosenqvist used the break before the season finale at Hockenheim for another competitive outing in the Blancpain GT Series. Together with co-driver Tristan Vautier, he made two podium appearances in Barcelona, including a first win of the 2016 campaign for the French-Swedish duo in the main race. Rosenqvist was full of praise for his team-mate: “Tristan’s start was one of the best I’ve ever seen. All I had to do was defend the lead. My thanks to the team, especially the engineers, who did a great job. We had one of the strongest cars in the main race.” After this latest success in a #mercedesamg GT3, Rosenqvist is now totally focused on the #dtm finale at Hockenheim. He is aiming to round off his debut season in style after achieving two points finishes on his first three #dtm race weekends.
Three questions for Daniel Juncadella
Dani, you were deprived of your greatest success so far in the #dtm, namely a podium in Budapest, because your floor did not comply with the regulations. How do you feel about this ruling?
Daniel Juncadella: As a driver, you’re powerless in such a situation. Unfortunately, this sometimes happens in motor #racing. Obviously, it’s a great pity. That was my first podium finish in the #dtm, and up to then, it had been a super day for me. So I’m not too disappointed, because I had a mega weekend in Budapest. The race on Sunday was absolutely fantastic and I did everything that was in my power. In the end, though, it just wasn’t meant to be.
All the same, how important was it for you to have at last got onto the podium, especially as the component in question was not relevant to performance?
Daniel Juncadella: It was mega important to me. This year is my fourth season in the #dtm, and I’d never had a podium finish before. Yet up to the point of disqualification, I’d managed to do that on a weekend when we were not all that competitive. From that perspective, it was a really cool experience to be standing up there on the podium. So for me personally, the disqualification does not change the fact that I made it onto the podium by virtue of my own performance.
What are your feelings going into the last race of the season at Hockenheim?
Daniel Juncadella: Very good feelings. I scored my best #dtm result so far on the previous race weekend, and the three weekends before that also went well for me. My crew and I are extremely well prepared for the final race of the season. Hopefully, I can finish on the podium again and maybe even step up a few rungs.
