Ryan Dungey and Marvin Musquin claim podium finishes at the 2016 Monster energy cup

With a unique #racing format of three 10-lap Main Events, riders in the premier Cup Class earned cumulative points from all three races to ultimately secure a final overall for the evening. In only his second race back from injury, Ryan Dungey rode his KTM 450 SX-F FACTORY EDITION to an impressive 2nd overall with 3-2-3 finishes for the evening.

Marvin Musquin had a stand-out performance aboard his KTM 450 SX-F FACTORY EDITION where he finished only one point behind his teammate for 3rd overall with 4-3-2 finishes.

Main #event 1
Dungey got off to a 4th place start on the opening lap, while Musquin began in the 6th place position. Both riders quickly advanced through pack – with Dungey securing the 3rd place position and Musquin finishing close behind in 4th.

Main #event 2
Dungey and Musquin got a good jump off the line but both riders were pushed wide, where they settled into 4th and 5th place on the opening lap. Dungey moved into the 3rd place position for the first half of the race while Musquin engaged in a battle for 4th.

The running order tightened up at the halfway point and Dungey began to gain time on the lead battle of Ken Roczen and Eli Tomac. Roczen ended up going down in the rhythm section on lap six, which allowed Dungey to move into 2nd and Musquin into 3rd.

Main #event 3
Heading into the third and final race of the evening, it was a three-way battle for the overall win as Dungey, Musquin and Tomac had a chance at winning. Musquin grabbed the early advantage with a 3rd place start, while Dungey began just inside the top five.

Musquin charged hard in the opening laps to put himself into a favorable 2nd place position behind Roczen, while Dungey and Tomac battled for the 3rd place spot. Tomac eventually made the pass on Dungey for 3rd but it all came down to the final lap of #racing as Tomac and Dungey still needed to take the “Joker Lane,” which is an additional section of the track that riders must pass through one time during the 10-lap race.

Musquin, who already took the “Joker Lane,” hooked up with the duo as they exited the additional lane and it was an all-out drag race to the finish. Musquin maintained his 2nd place position ahead of the others, while Dungey made a spectacular pass on Tomac to claim the final podium position in the race.

Tomac ultimately topped Dungey for the overall win by only one point, while Musquin finished another point behind his teammate for 3rd overall.

Dungey: “Overall tonight was good. It’s been a while since we were on a gate drop with these riders. It was great to get some solid time on the bike and get back into a rhythm – it was a good prep race as we get ready for the season. We have a lot of work to do but the bike ran good all night and we’re going to continue to try new things. We’re looking forward to the challenges that lie ahead.”

Musquin: “It’s a huge step for me, I’m happy with the way I rode today. My starts were not great, I was always getting pushed to the outside and I was losing a ton of time but I came back and fought so hard. It’s only 10 laps but they were long laps. I’m happy to have both of us (Dungey and I) on the podium together. It’s always tough to beat Ryan but right now I am feeling closer and closer and I’m glad to finish on a good note today.”

Dungey and Musquin will go on to compete in the Red Bull Straight Rhythm #event next Saturday, October 22 in Pomona, California. The duo will be joined by their newest Red Bull KTM Factory #racing teammate Trey Canard, who will make his debut #racing appearance on the KTM 450 SX-F FACTORY EDITION.
