Silk Way Rally First Day: SSV Drama, MAZ Outpaces KAMAZ

Comunicato Stampa disponibile solo in lingua originale.

Despite the fact that the first selective section was relatively short, many competitors faced difficulties. The first selective section of the 13th edition of the International #silkwayrally started at a picturesque lake and showed the incredible landscapes on the roads of the Republic of #tatarstan. Numerous spectators supported the competitors throughout almost the entire distance. Nevertheless, these 142 kilometers have become a challenge for the crews just getting used to the pace of the #rally. High-speed roads, navigation traps and fords predetermined the difficult nature of the stage — not everyone managed to overcome them without problems.

Vasilyev is Overall Standings Leader

Vladimir Vasilyev from the VRT Team set the absolute best time in the Car standings. In the T1 category he was six minutes ahead of Andrey Rudskoy and more than twelve minutes ahead of Alexey Ignatov. As Vasilyev admitted at the finish line, the crew overcame the distance carefully, and yet in some places on slippery grass it was not easy to keep the car under control. The fourth time in the T1 standings was set by Alexander Rusanov, who was five minutes ahead of Bogdan Vavrenyuk.

Close Competition in T3

At the beginning of the special stage Dmitry Mordkovich was in the lead in the SSV standings — at the first waypoint he was 47 seconds ahead of #sergeykaryakin. However, during the final part the SSV jumped into a ditch in the fast corner and damaged the suspension. The crew managed to repair the vehicle, but by the finish line the losses exceeded 80 minutes.

At the final part of the selective section #sergeykaryakin retook the initiative and eventually set the best time, but later he was fined two minutes for violating the speed limit. As a result, Anastasia Nifontova took the first place among the SSV crews, Karyakin was second 40 seconds behind, and Alexey Cherkesov rounded out the top three, ahead of Alexander Mironenko and the debutant of the #silkwayrally #romanrusinov from G-Drive #racing.

LADA Takes Lead in T2

Dmitry Voronov from the LADA Sport ROSNEFT Raid Team was the fastest among production cars of the T2 category. After the finish line the driver talked about a puncture 400 meters before it, but thanks to the precise work of his co-driver Evgeny Zagorodnyuk the nearest rivals — #antonmelnikov and Evgeny Sukhovenko were left behind. Following the top three are Leonid Petrov, Maxatmyrat Danatarov and Merdan Toylyyev.

MAZ-SPORTauto Outpaces KAMAZ-Master

In the Truck category the first stage ended up with unexpected results — the first two positions were taken by the MAZ-SPORTauto crews. In addition, Alexey Vishneuski set the second time among all the crews, losing only to #vladimirvasilyev in a T1 class car. Sergey Vyazovich scored a brilliant second result at the distance, while Eduard Nikolaev and #dmitrysotnikov — the best representatives of the KAMAZ-Master took the third and fourth positions. The top 5 was rounded out by another MAZ-SPORTauto crew led by Vitaly Murylev.

It is interesting that the first eight crews of the T5 category are separated by less than seven minutes — the battle between the KAMAZ-Master and the MAZ-SPORTauto promises an incredible intrigue until the very last day of the #rally. At the same time, the GAZ Raid Sport crews lost about 20 minutes at the first stage, and #yurinayman driving the newest URAL bonneted truck was almost 50 minutes behind. However, he drove through the final part of the selective section almost at the pace of the leader showing the potential of his vehicle. Gilemov and Tikhonov are Ahead

At the first stage #alexandergilemov had no equals in the Quad standings, he was eight minutes ahead of his Lion #racing Team partner Anatoly Kuznetsov.

According to the results of the first selective section Ilya Shcheglov is the leader in the #moto standing. In winter he won the first-ever Silk Way Snow Journey Snowmobile Rally-Raid. Nail Khubbatullin is the second in this category, despite the penalty.

In addition, there is an exciting competition in the G-MOTO Challenge, where riders overcome the distance without the help of mechanics. #evgenytikhonov on a KTM motorcycle was the fastest in this category and Dmitry Kalinin on a Can-Am quad took the second place.

Mysteries and Secrets of Grand Tour

The Small Towns of Russia Grand Tour also started as part of the #silkwayrally in Kazan. Crews without sports experience participate in the #event in order to explore the world of motorsport from the inside and prepare for future competitions. All 20 crews overcame the distance, although there were some mistakes in navigation, and one competitor lost a wheel on the track, but he intends to repair the car and continue driving.

However, the tests of the day for the Grand Tour competitors did not end at the finish line of the selective section. At the end of the distance, they had to find a small town propounded by the Organizers, as well as check in at certain points with the crew's #rally plate. Thus, the results of the stages, as well as the entire competition depend not only on overcoming the selective section, but also on the correctness and speed of solving the quests along the #silkwayrally route.

Stage 2: Ufa — Magnitogorsk

On July 8 the crews will tackle the second stage of the #silkwayrally, which will bring competitors from Ufa to Magnitogorsk. The selective section starts right at the foot of the Ural Mountains, and then the drivers will go to Asia, where they will find high-speed tracks that allow them to use the full power of their vehicles. However, the co-drivers need to remain extremely attentive — there are many springs and rivers on the route, as well as insidious gullies.

Quotes

Vladimir Vasilyev (VRT), "Congrats on the first start! Tracks are good, 140 kilometers, but they weren't easy at all, along fields and ravines. I had to control myself on the first day, I had to get used to driving, but the selective section was challenging. There were no difficulties with the fords, but the grass somewhere was very slippery – you slow down, but the car, on the contrary, accelerates. But this is the first day, we felt and tried. It is very pleasant there are so many spectators here, like nowhere else – both at the ceremony the day before, and on the track."

Sergey Karyakin (Snag #racing Team), "Everything is fine. At the 30th kilometer we caught up with the Cherkesovs, beeped them many times, but they didn't let us through. Then we came up with Ivan Bezdenezhnykh and Dmitry Mordkovich – they broke down, hit a stone. While we were turning to help them, we hit the same stone. It was a terrible blow, but we looked at the car – everything seems to be intact. Then we caught up with Cherkesov again, followed him, beeped many times again – the result was the same. We didn't plan to take risks and drove quietly in the dust. We are not afraid of fords, the car is closed, we turned on the wipers and passed them."

Roman Rusinov (G-Drive Racing), "Everything is very cool, but it's not clear why our car is pulled to the left, we need to figure it out. The track is very interesting, quite fast, but it was not possible to accelerate, because nothing is visible in the dust. There were a couple of traps, they are really challenging. I tore my co-driver to pieces 10 times, but in general everything is fine, he's well done. Spectators welcome us very warmly; they are standing along the entire track – that's great."

Dmitry Voronov (LADA Sport ROSNEFT Raid), "The wheel was punctured 300-400 meters before the finish line. Big cars raise dust and drive slowly. We didn't notice a stone in the dust, but we understood that the finish line was close, so it was ok", Voronov said. "Navigation was good – we didn't stray or wander, didn't waste time. Probably, it will be more difficult further, in steppes. There are field and forest roads here, there are many references."

Anton Melnikov (Podmoskovye), "Everything is fine, I admired the scenery. There are 8 stages ahead, so I took care of the vehicle and didn't rush. Nevertheless, in one place we accelerated up to 150 kph and missed the pit. We jumped quite high, landed on the front left wheel, but we kept the car. So everything is fine, we are at the finish line. The vehicle is good, nothing has fallen off."

Aleksey Vishneuski (MAZ-SPORTauto), "In general, everything is not bad. We had two small mistakes in navigation with minimal losses. Then we caught up with two KAMAZes — bonneted and cabover ones, ran into the dust and could not drive further. So we finished behind them."

Dmitry Sotnikov (KAMAZ-Master), "There are many #people and villages here. I think it was a very spectacular picture for the audience today. It was very dusty. We tried to drive very carefully. There were many fields, it was necessary to stay on the track, and it was very difficult, because the truck is big. At the beginning there was a bit strange place, where we lost time because of navigation. Today it was necessary to save the truck and try to avoid losses."

Yuri Nayman (URAL), "It was difficult, but we made it to the finish line. It was very hot, a lot of bumps. We had to stand about 10 minutes because of a slight overheating. There were no further problems. We met GAZ on the track, it was lying on the roof. It looked like it was a Chinese crew. I had to overtake motorcyclists — we competed with them because of our stop. So everything is fine, we arrived here. The trial short selective section is passed, we are satisfied and will prepare for a longer one."

Evgeny Tikhonov (UU(T)OR), "The day went well — the weather is warm, there's no rain. The track is dusty, but we rode carefully. The fords are excellent — they are shallow with clear water. The Road Book holder doesn't work well, apparently, I damaged it at the last competition, we will try to fix it in the evening."

Alexander Gilemov (Lion #racing Team), "The stage was fast, there were no mistakes with navigation, I didn't get lost anywhere. The fords are large, in some places I almost drowned, but in general I'm satisfied. I overtook the guys from the #moto standings, and now it's time to prepare for tomorrow."
