Van de Moosdijk Podiums in Silver at Junior MX Worlds

Roan Van de Moosdijk flew across the Orlyonok motocross circuit off the Black Sea Coast of Russia with the fastest times in qualifying and free practice on Saturday at the Junior MX World Championships.

"The race circuit was on top of a mountain, and it looked out over the Black Sea. It was hot, 30 degrees, really hot. And the humidity was very high. Saturday was definitely worse than Sunday," van de Moosdijk said.

On Sunday in the first #moto he slipped from an imperfect start to third after the first turn, but quickly assumed authority of his YZ125 and proceeded to pass in lap two and go on to win.

"In the second lap I passed through to first and got a gap with another guy. He was holding my speed for a couple of laps, but in the end I wore him out and finished with more than seven seconds," he said.

In #moto two the championship held by a hook, as Belgian Jago Geerts, second in the early race and the 2016 EMX125 Championship series winner, kept himself cool in the subtropical Russian August heat. Van de Moosdijk started third, rolled through to second but never quite found place or time to close the gap to first.

"It was really classic hardpack, a lot of bumps, really nice jumps. There were stones coming up, and the speeds were really high. Once Geerts got his gap on me he could hold it, because there was just one rideable line. By the end of the race the backmarkers were in between us and there was no place to pass," van de Moosdijk said.

Van de Moosdijk finished second overall on Sunday, his highest achievement at the World Championship level.

"I want to thank my Dad, who is always with me. And David at DP19 and all the #people at the #yamaha Family. I learn so much and I get so much help from them to grow this year as a motocrosser. I thank the mechanics who work, and the sponsors for the bike and engine. At the KNMV, the Dutch Motorcycle Federation, I want to thank Marcel Hartman and Herjan Brakke for all their support."

The trip to Russia for Van de Moosdijk began last Thursday, and together with the Dutch Motorcycle Federation and his father he took part in his fifth World Championship, and first race ever in Russia. In 2016 the Dutch teenager raced to fifth overall in his rookie EMX125 season on David Philippaerts's DP19 #racing #yamaha MX Team, missing two rounds with injury.
