Mario Lucas leads F4E Racing to dream debut

The newly established #f4eracing team of European FMX pioneer Jimmy Verburgh immediately made a splash at its inaugural #emx125 race in #valkenswaard. Spain’s Mario Lucas Sanz clinched his first European podium while young Dutchman Kjell Verbruggen (14) shone in the second #moto. What a start for the Belgian outfit!

The classy cool new race trailer definitely proved to be an eye catcher in the paddock. However it was not only the presentation of the #f4eracing team that grabbed the attention. In unusually cold conditions the #emx125 riders started their weekend early on Saturday. Mario Lucas and Kjell Verbruggen were not the least intimidated by the “Winter Wonderland” setting of the classic Eurocircuit. True to form Lucas hit the ground running by posting the second time in his qualifying group ahead of team mate Verbruggen.

Wannes Van De Voorde, who made an excellent impression during the Dutch ONK races, never reached his full potential. As a result the reigning Belgian 125 Schoolboy champion was relegated to the Last Chance Qualifying race. In the second lap Van De Voorde couldn’t avoid a fallen rider in front of him and went down himself. Luckily without any physical harm but from way down the leader board he could only muster 16th place and failed to qualify.

The #emx125 riders were the last to enter the track on Saturday. Admittedly the opening #moto for Europe’s fastest young riders became an instant classic due to the rough terrain, piercing wind and temperatures below 0° C. Austrian title favourite Rene Hofer confirmed with a convincing victory. However it was rookie Mario Lucas who became the real revelation of the race. The 16-year old #f4eracing rider made a name for himself with a standout performance. Eventually Lucas came home third in front of Sweden’s Olsson and France’s Benistant. Home rider Verbruggen rode to 26th in his very first #emx125 outing.

The second #moto on Sunday turned out to be a carbon copy for winner Hofer. For the F4E team crew, sponsors and supporters it was the icing on the cake. Both Verbruggen and Lucas ran up front the whole working the #f4eracing team into a frenzy! A slight transponder issue caused some confusion but Kjell Verbruggen not only grabbed a monster start he firmly stood his ground and finished fifth, just a couple of seconds in front of his Spanish team mate Lucas. The latter had a less than optimal start but bounced back from outside the top 10 to capture sixth. Thus Mario secured a double whammy with his first ever European podium and F4E Racing’s first rostrum finish.

The #emx125 series continues on the 7th and 8th of April in Arco di Trento, Italy.
