HONDA TEAMS TAKE PODIUMS IN EWC AND WTCR DOUBLE-HEADER IN SLOVAKIA

This weekend the Slovakia Ring circuit, located just East of Bratislava, played host to the first Eurosport Events-run double-header which twinned the FIA World Touring Car Cup (WTCR) and the FIM Endurance World Championship (EWC).

Honda, with the Civic Type R and the CBR1000RR Fireblade, were the only manufacturer to be competing in both, and came away with podium finishes in each category.

With alternating days on track, the 8 Hours of Slovakia Ring EWC motorcycle race took place on Saturday, followed by the three WTCR races on Sunday.

Honda Endurance Racing trio Randy de Puniet, Yonny Hernandez and Sebastien Gimbert lined up alongside F.C.C. TSR Honda France’s Freddy Foray, Mike di Meglio and Josh Hook with their CBR1000RR Fireblades, and both teams demonstrated podium-pace throughout the weekend. Indeed, with one hour of the race to go Honda Endurance Racing were leading the race in the mixed wet/dry conditions until a crash demoted the team to eighth. That meant however that F.C.C. TSR Honda France, last year’s EWC Champions, moved into third to take a hard-fought podium.

Sunday brought four-wheel action with WTCR, and more podiums followed for Honda Racing’s customer teams. ALL-INKL.com Münnich Motorsport duo Nestor Girolami and Esteban Guerrieri finished first and second in race two aboard their Civic Type R TCR. Girolami leads the WTCR championship standings with teammate Guerrieri in second just two points behind, and the team is now 50 points clear in the lead of the Team’s standings.

The next event on the WTCR calendar is in the Netherlands this coming weekend, 18-19 May, and for EWC is 8 Hours of Oschersleben, Germany, 7-9 June.
