Sir Lewis: Reigning F1 World Champion Lewis Hamilton has received a knighthood in the New Year’s Honours list for exceptional service and for his contribution to motor #racing. Lewis won his seventh world championship title in the 2020 season, equalling Michael Schumacher’s record. Furthermore, he is now the most successful contestant in the history of Formula One in terms of race wins, pole positions and podiums. In addition to his sporting achievements, Lewis supports a variety of good causes with charitable and philanthropic work. For example, he has led the campaign to improve equal opportunities in motorsport and supports disadvantaged young people and children’s charities.

Floodlit debut: The Mercedes-Benz EQ Formula E Team will have to wait a little longer for the start of their second season in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship. The curtain-raiser event has been delayed to 26/27 February when Diriyah in Saudi Arabia will host the first ever night races in the history of the all-electric #racing series. The E-Prix opener was originally scheduled to take place next weekend (16/17 January) in Santiago, Chile. However, the fixture has had to be postponed due to the COVID 19 pandemic. The other 2021 race dates are set to be announced in the coming weeks. Since the end of the official test sessions in Valencia at the beginning of December, the team has been back at the factory, preparing the Mercedes-Benz EQ Silver Arrow 02 for its first race outing.

Sustainable change in motorsport: Shortly before the turn of the year, the Mercedes-Benz EQ Formula E Team received the three-star environmental seal of approval under the FIA’s ecological certification programme. It joins the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team, which also had the environmental seal of approval conferred on it last year. The seal of approval was awarded on the basis of the joint measures undertaken at the #mercedesbenzmotorsport factories in Brackley and Brixworth as well as at HWA AG in Affalterbach. Over the course of the next twelve months, the team will channel its sustainability efforts in twelve ‘Sustainability Objectives’. These objectives range from motorsport specific sustainability training and education to changes in our purchasing processes and travel procedures.

Class victory and podium finish for Customer #racing teams as 2021 gets underway: The Mercedes-AMG Customer #racing teams chalked up their first successes of 2021 in the opening fixture of the new motorsport year. RAM #racing made a podium appearance in the Gulf 12 Hours endurance race at the Bahrain International Circuit. Chris Frogatt, Ian Loggie and Callum MacLeod (all GBR) in the number 3 Mercedes-AMG GT3 finished third overall at the end of the 339 laps, which was enough for them to take the runner-up spot in the Pro-Am class. The Scuderia Villorba Corse quartet of Michele Camarlinghi, Piero Randazzo, Benedetto Strignano (all ITA) and Jean Luc D’Auria (SUI) in the number 90 Mercedes-AMG GT4 also secured class victory with eighth place overall.

The first standout race of the season for the Customer Sports teams starts on Friday when no fewer than five Mercedes-AMG GT3s from CP #racing, Haupt #racing Team, MP Motorsport and Racetivity will line up on the grid for the 24 Hours of Dubai (start 12 noon CET). Also competing in the endurance classic at the Dubai Autodrome will be two Mercedes-AMG GT4s entered by Comet #racing and Dragon #racing. If this year’s round-the-clock race results in the same trophy haul as last year, the performance and sports car brand from Affalterbach could emerge as sole record holder among the manufacturers.
