From Gen1 to Gen3: the incredible evolution of formula e developed by DS Performance!

  • DS Performance has developed all the powertrains for the DS single-seaters competing in the ABB FIA Formula E World championship since 2015
  • From 2018 to 2022, the generation 2 DS single-seater has made history in the sport by taking two double titles and an impressive number of podiums
  • The competition arm of DS Automobiles constitutes a technical launchpad for the French premium brand that forms part of the Stellantis Group Since its creation in 2014, DS Automobiles has always placed electrification at the heart of its strategy.

With motorsport forming the best tool to accelerate technology transfer from track to road, the brand created its competition arm – DS Performance – in the same year and entered the young and dynamic Formula E championship, which was opening up the grid for the first time to individual constructors in Season 2.

First-generation DS single seater
In 2015, we were in the first-generation Formula E era. Featuring a maximum power output of 200 kW (with a weight of 920 kg) and a braking recovery capacity of 15%, the single seater DS Gen1 car made a notable entry into the all-electric championship. In fact, from Season 2, it took four pole positions, four podiums and one victory. This promising performance would go from strength to strength right up to the end of Season 4, thanks to the agility of DS Performance – which functioned as a start-up at the time. In total, between 2015 and 2018, the DS Gen1 car took 16 podiums, representing a trophy every two races.

Second-generation DS single seater
DS Performance achieved a huge technological milestone for the start of the second generation of Formula E, Season 5. Thanks to more power – producing 250 kW – lighter weight (900kg) and increased efficiency (30% energy recovery when braking), DS Automobiles and Jean-Eric Vergne consistently fought at the sharp end of the field, clinching the first teams’ and drivers’ double title in Formula E history in 2019.
In 2020, the brand repeated this feat with António Felix Da Costa at the wheel of the Season 6 DS car, which was a natural evolution of the Season 5 car. Although there were no titles in seasons seven and eight, DS Performance firmly maintained its place among the leading competitors by finishing third in the teams’ classification; closing the Gen2 era with a record number of points and podiums.

Third-generation DS single seater
In December 2022, following two years of development and an unprecedented mobilisation of resources, DS Performance inaugurated the third generation of single seater at the Valencia circuit. The Gen3 is the fastest Formula E car in history, with a maximum speed of 280kph on a street circuit, as well as the lightest: weighing 60 kilograms less than the Gen2 car. Above all, it’s much more efficient, with a braking regeneration capacity greater than 40%.

The DS Gen3 (DS E-TENSE FE23) is also more powerful than its predecessors, with 350 kW generated from its four regenerative wheels. A new front drivetrain adds an extra 250 kW to the 350 kW at the rear, doubling the regenerative capacity from the previous Gen2 car to a total of 600 kW. Finally, thanks to the addition of the front drivetrain, this single seater is the first without hydraulic rear brakes.
Since the start of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship Season 9, the #dsetensefe23 has shown that it’s capable of taking its drivers as well as DS Automobiles towards new titles.

Strengthened by his victory in Hyderabad, India, on February 11 and a very encouraging second place in Cape Town, South Africa, on February 25, Jean-Eric Vergne – the only double champion in Formula E history – is now fourth in the drivers’ standings. As for reigning world champion Stoffel Vandoorne, the Belgian took a magnificent pole position in São Paulo, Brazil, on March 25.

By imagining and developing the powertrains of DS single seaters since 2015, DS Performance has established itself as a true technological leader. Thanks to all the experience acquired in Formula E, DS Automobiles has been able to definitively accelerate technology transfer to its ETENSE production vehicles for the road. It’s an approach that brings clear benefits to the customers of the brand, which will be 100% electric from 2024.

Eugenio Franzetti, director of DS Performance:
“The very young history of Formula E is an extraordinary acceleration towards the future. In less than 10 years, cars have become lighter, more powerful, faster, and more autonomous. For DS Automobiles and its competition division, participating in this 100% electric championship is a
strategic decision. Since its creation, the mission of DS Performance has always been very clear:
to support the electrification of the DS Automobiles brand through motorsport, which has firmly established itself as a technological accelerator. The winning experiences that we have enjoyed over many seasons of Formula E allow the electrified cars of today and the electric cars of tomorrow to benefit from the best technologies. Our commitment to Formula E is essential because, from 2024, all new DS Automobiles cars will be 100% electric.”

Thomas Chevaucher, Stellantis Motorsport FE programme director:
“Thanks to the brilliant DS Performance crews, the DS E-TENSE FE cars have made their mark on the history of Formula E as well as on the history of the DS Automobiles brand. Since we made our commitment to this very competitive series, we have won at least one race each season, with almost one out of every two races bringing us a podium! Thanks to our titles, our victories, and our podiums, we actively participate in the development of electric technologies for the brand's production cars, both in terms of hardware and software. Motorsport has always been a fantastic driver of innovation for the #automotive industry as a whole and this is sure to remain the case for a long time to come!”

Key figures since DS Automobiles entered Formula E:
- 95 races
- 4 championship titles
- 16 victories
- 46 podiums
- 22 pole positions
