The portfolios of two Singaporean student designers just got a big level-up. Their helmet #design edged out 37 others and was handpicked by McLaren- Honda Formula One driver #jensonbutton as his favorite at the #tagheuerarthelmetdesigncompetition held at Wisma Atria today. With the latest ruling by the Formula One Commission restricting drivers from changing their helmet designs, Button will not be wearing the ‘designed in Singapore’ helmet anytime soon, however, he sang its praises. “It’s obvious a lot of heart has gone in to all these designs, but this one in particular stands out to me with the Union Jack nice and clear on top. It’s striking and would look great especially against the backdrop of the night race here in #singapore,” Button said. In addition to this celebrity endorsement, the winning students Shannen Loh and Rachel Leow were each presented with a #tagheuer Formula 1 watch. Their helmet #design featured colours chosen to stand out on the street circuit and gradients to represent the sun setting on the night race. Button’s own helmet will be hard to miss on the Marina Bay Street Circuit when the #singapore Grand Prix starts tomorrow. Red and white, it is emblazoned on both sides with his name in Japanese characters as a nod to his wife Jessica Michibata’s heritage, and splashed across the back, a Union Jack representing his own roots. The #event also marked the release of the #tagheuer Formula 1 McLaren Limited Edition watch in stores. The watch commemorates the 30-year partnership between the Swiss luxury watchmaker and McLaren. Only 5000 pieces are available worldwide.
