This is what happened: Weekend’s results & facts

  • Formula One: Lewis Hamilton won the #abudhabi Grand Prix from Silver Arrows team-mate Nico Rosberg
  • Formula One: #nicorosberg became Formula One World Champion for first time
  • Formula One: Mercedes AMG Petronas wrapped up the 2016 Constructors’ World Championship at the Japanese Grand Prix in early October
  • Champion facts – #nicorosberg: He’s done it! #nicorosberg is the new Formula One World Champion! Nico is now the second #f1 champion to bear the Rosberg name 34 years after his father, Keke, took the title in 1982. By the way, they both won the World Championship in a car, bearing start number 6. Keke won the title for Finland, but Nico is the third #f1 champion to come from Germany after Michael Schumacher and Sebastian Vettel. Graham and Damon Hill are the only other father-son duo to win the world title. Nico will be officially honoured as Formula One World Champion at the FIA Prize giving Gala in Vienna next Friday when he’ ll get to hold the trophy for the first time. By the way, he picked up a special award last Sunday for posting the most fastest race laps this season. He took the title well before the finale in #abudhabi with six fastest laps.

Champion facts – Silver Arrows: Mercedes AMG Petronas achieved a hat-trick of double wins this season. Since the start of the Hybrid Power Unit era in 2014, the Silver Arrows have now won the drivers’ and constructors’ titles in three consecutive years. The team won 19 of 21 races this season, taking eight one-two wins along the way. Lewis Hamilton’s success on Sunday in #abudhabi was also the 150th Formula One victory for a vehicle powered by Mercedes. The Silver Arrows have achieved more than a third of these wins, 51 altogether, over the past three years.

DTM in Jerez: While the Formula One season may have just ended, the DTM is already gearing up for the new year. After testing two weeks ago at the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve in Portimão, the Mercedes-AMG DTM Team are back at the test track this week at the Spanish circuit in Jerez de la Frontera where Edoardo Mortara also made his test debut in the Mercedes-AMG C 63 DTM on Tuesday. FIA Formula 3 European Championship runner-up Maximilian Günther and Maro Engel will also be in action this week during the Young Driver tests.

    Three questions for Gary Paffett

Gary, the next round of testing for 2017 is taking place in Jerez this week. How do you think the cars are coming along as regards to their development?

Gary Paffett: We are, of course, still at a relatively early stage of development. We’re driving a sort of hybrid vehicle with some new parts, but the aerodynamics package is still mainly from 2016. It’s a mixture of things from 2016 and 2017, but I’m happy so far. The tyres feel good and will ensure plenty of exciting #racing. The car feels really great overall.

Do you think that the races will be even more exciting next year?

Gary Paffett: The changes mean a bit less downforce, but the tyres will have slightly more grip. That should make it possible to get closer to the guy in front, so #racing should be that bit more exciting and also lead to more overtaking manoeuvres. It should also prove interesting as regards to strategy. The changes are definitely positive, all in all.

Maximilian Günther took out a DTM car for the first time on Day 1 of testing. How do you rate him?

Gary Paffett: It was a great day for Maxi. Your first day of testing a DTM car is always very special. He posted lots of laps, putting in some short and long runs, and learned a great deal. Maxi has done a good job and will get another chance to gain more experience in the car on Wednesday. It will be interesting then to see how he improves after having had the evening to think about what he’s learned.
