Zell am See (AUT), 24 January 2020 – Around 150 competitors and spectacular show cars, a big array of historic and modern race and rally cars plus the latest highlights from modern e-mobility – the second edition of the new #gpicerace (1-2 February 2020) in Austria’s top winter sports resort Zell am See-Kaprun offers a spectacular cross over of #automotive history, presence and future. Leading sports car manufacturer #porsche has on display its Formula E World Championship race car 99x Electric as well as the further developed version of the winner of the 24 hours race at Le Mans and Nuerburgring Nordschleife lap record holder, the #porsche 919 Hybrid evo. ŠKODA presents “Ice Race of Champions” with rally aces from four countries, all #racing in ŠKODA FABIA Rally2 evo. Former Formula One driver Hans-Joachim Stuck powers historic Grand Prix racer March-Cosworth 741 with unique twin studded rear wheel tyres around the icy track.

Porsche – Rallying history and e-mobility

From desert to ice: #porsche presents a wide array of spectacular race and rally cars, including the 1984 Rally Dakar winning #porsche 911 Carrera 3.2 4x4. At the #gpicerace (1-2 February 2020), the Sahara proven race car will turn to ice and snow for the very first time, on this occasion driven by Le Mans winners Timo Bernhard and Jörg Bergmeister.

The #porsche carrying the model code 953 was the company’s very first all-wheel drive car. For the 14,000 kilometres through Africa, #porsche modified the near-standard 3.2-litre engine in preparation for poor quality fuel. Nevertheless, 225 hp were enough to ensure a dominant Dakar victory by René Metge and Dominique Lemoyne. The 36 years old #porsche will double up as towing machine for Norwegian ski ace Aksel Lund Svindahl. The former World Champion and Olympic gold medallist will entertain the fans with some skijoring, naturally at race speed. The #gpicerace visitors can also see a beautiful #porsche 911 Speedster Heritage and a #porsche 911 GT3 in action. 2016 Le Mans winner Neel Jani will be seen behind the steering wheel as well. The brand new, all electric #porsche Taycan will be used for demo runs on the ice track. Also, a #porsche 919 Hybrid Evo, all time lap record holder at the famous Nuerburgring Nordschleife”, as well as a #porsche 99x Electric Formula E race car will be on display.

ŠKODA with “Ice Race of Champions”

ŠKODA will bring three champions plus one vice-champion to Zell am See-Kaprun, #racing against each other in a competition called “Ice Race of Champions” and alternating at the wheel of some 290 hp strong all-wheel driven ŠKODA FABIA Rally2 evo. Filip Mareš from Czech Republic is the 2019 Junior Champion of the European Rally Championship, while Martin Koči (Slovakia) and Fabian Kreim (Germany) won titles in their respective home countries.

Austrian Julian Wagner, who finished the national championship on second place, is the only driver of the competition, who already got some experience with studded tyres on the ice race track. He impressed with fast times during last years’ edition. Jan Kopecký, 2019 #gpicerace category winner, WRC2 Champion of 2018 and seven times Czech Rally Champion, will support the young guns and is expected to throw in some action of his own with demonstration runs.

Racing legend Stuck with spectacular Formula One race car

German #racing legend Hans-Joachim “Strietzel” Stuck will race his 1976 Jägermeister Formula One March-Cosworth 741 in #zellamsee. The car is equipped with bespoke twin studded tyres on the rear axle to cope with the 480 hp, its V8 engine is delivering at screaming 11,200 rpm.

Pirelli new sponsor of GP Ice Race

Pirelli’s technological excellence is nourished by the innovation and competencies derived from sporting competitions, in which it has been active for over 110 years. At present, the company participates in over 350 car and motorcycle sport events and since 2011 it has been the exclusive tyre supplier to the Formula One World Championship. From 2021 onwards, Pirelli will be the official tyre supplier to the FIA World Rally Championship as well. Such a strong presence in motorsport enables Pirelli to generate avant-garde solutions that are then transferred into tyre ranges for the consumer market, ensuring the maximum level of performance and safety.

“Ice Week 2020” – ice fever in Zell am See-Kaprun

From 27 January to 2 February 2020, the village of #zellamsee is fully focused on the #gpicerace. The community celebrates the race with special events. One of the highlights happens on Friday, 31 January, when from 18h00 to 22h00 (local time) the exhibition “Luftgekühlt” (Air-cooled) pays tribute to legendary #porsche sports and race cars, showing iconic cars in front of the Ferry #porsche Congress Center.

At the #gpicerace during the first weekend of February, nearly 150 competitors will demonstrate spectacular motorsport. The competition covers eight different classes, ranging from modern rally cars to classic racers, buggies and the ancient sport of skijoring – where skiers are pulled by race cars.

Like last year the sporting part of the 2020 edition of the #gpicerace will be in the hands of Motorsport-Club Kitzbuehel. punktEins Organisations GmbH works as operational lead agency for #event initiators Ferdinand #porsche and Vinzenz Greger. Zell am See-Kaprun Tourismusverband GmbH is again sponsoring and supporting the #event.

TV tip: During the 27 January issue of „Sport&Talk“ (21h15 local time in the Austrian channel, 23h15 in the German channel), Austrian broadcaster ServusTV features the #gpicerace with studio guests Ferdinand #porsche and Hans-Joachim Stuck.
