Max Verstappen Earns Sixth Straight Podium For Honda

Comunicato Stampa disponibile solo in lingua originale.

  • Verstappen third in race, still second in point standings
  • Trio of Honda-powered cars score championship points
  • Pierre Gasly voted Driver of the Day by fans

Max Verstappen racked up a sixth consecutive Formula 1 podium on Sunday at the Belgian Grand Prix, running a competitive third behind a pair of Mercedes drivers in his Honda-powered Aston Martin Red Bull.

Verstappen's solid finish in a largely uneventful race again led a trio of Hondas that earned championship points at the fabled Spa-Francorchamps circuit as Alex Albon (6th) and #pierregasly (8th) ended their days inside the top 10 after strong efforts.

Starting third Sunday, Verstappen had to fight off a stern challenge from Daniel Ricciardo in the opening corners of the race to hold onto that position, while Albon scuffled with Ricciardo's Renault teammate Esteban Ocon for fifth throughout the early part of the race.

Behind them, the Scuderia AlphaTauri squad decided to start #pierregasly on the hard Pirelli tires, hoping the Frenchman might be able to use the longer-lasting shoes to his advantage by running longer than his competitors. But endurance wasn't on the mind of the young Frenchman as he vaulted four spots in the first three laps, setting himself up to make the team's strategy pay off handsomely.

Unfortunately an Antonio Giovinazzi crash brought out the Safety Car on Lap 11, allowing the rest of the field to pit for hard tires and negating Gasly's advantage. He pitted on Lap 27 and dropped back to 16th, but with softer, faster tires on his Honda-powered machine, he stormed through the back of the field. The march was capped by a pass of Lance Stroll on the last lap to secure eighth place. His day was recognized by race viewers, who voted him Driver of the Day.

Verstappen's Red Bull stablemate Albon started fifth and finished sixth, which was good enough to promote him ahead of Charles Leclerc and into fourth place in the #F1 driver standings. Gasly's teammate Daniil Kvyat started and finished 11th, although he was running in the points late in the race when he obeyed team orders and allowed the quicker Gasly car to pass him as he chased Stroll.

The finish allowed Verstappen to maintain his second-place position in the championship and makes him the closest driver to series leader Lewis Hamilton. Gasly's finish moved him up a spot to 12th while Kvyat is tied for 15th. The Red Bull squad is solidly in second place in the constructor's championship, 90 ahead of third-placed Renault. AlphaTauri continues to run 7th.

The teams and drivers of the Formula 1 World Championship will head to Italy next week, visiting the legendary Autodromo Nazionale Monza for the Italian Grand Prix.

Toyoharu Tanabe
Technical Director, #Honda F1
"Having three cars in the top eight was an okay result. Max did particularly well to manage the tires and keep consistent lap times, despite degradation during the last stint. His third place means #Honda has six consecutive podiums this season. Alex had a tough race, in the middle of a train of cars and generally did well and was unlucky to lose a place on the last lap. Pierre was the only driver to start on hard tires and we feel he could have finished higher, but the Safety Car came at the wrong time for his strategy. Daniil again raced strongly and was unlucky to finish just outside the points. Monza will be the first race with new rules regarding PU mode restrictions and we have been doing simulation work to be as prepared as possible."

"I love this track but the race was not really the most exciting from my side. It wasn't really much of a fight and I just tried to do my own race and maximize the result. On the medium tire I didn't have a lot of grip and then on the hard I was initially trying to put pressure on Valtteri (Bottas) but he was told to speed up and was able to build a good gap, so after that it was a bit lonely. There was not much action up front unfortunately and the tire wear was quite high so we couldn't really push. I took no risks and brought it home. Overall, we had a good weekend and the car balance was nice so we can be pleased with that. We are not here to finish third and we want more but it is always good to be on the podium."

"It was a frustrating race and it was pretty tricky to do anything. I felt pretty good at the start on the soft tire and then we managed to jump (Esteban) Ocon in the pits when we changed to mediums, thanks to a good stop from the boys in the garage. I don't think we expected as much degradation as we got on that compound but I pushed as hard as I could to try and do the overtakes and the tires just dropped off. We'll have a look at it before our focus shifts towards Monza in a few days but it's nice to move up to fourth in the championship which is a sign we're making progress."

It was an important day for me because I wanted to do well for Anthoine (Hubert) after what happened last year. We decided to go for a different strategy, starting on the hard compound. It was better than expected and I was able to attack and overtake quite a few cars. The move on (Sergio) Perez was especially intense but very enjoyable! We knew a safety car between the start of the race and lap 20 would be a killer for us, but unfortunately, that's what happened and gave the other cars a free pitstop. After our pitstop, we exited almost last and we had to fight back through the field, but I enjoyed it and to recover to P8 was just great! It's nice to be voted Driver of the Day, so thanks to all the #people who voted for me and I'll try to put this kind of performance again and again in the coming weeks."

I think that we didn't choose the right strategy today, so we will have to review our race. We couldn't have known it before the race, so we split the cars and unfortunately, I was on the wrong side of the strategy call. It would have been better to start on the harder compound, and I felt I was always in the wrong place at the wrong time today, because at a track like #Spa, it's very hard to keep cars behind on old tires."
