Ed è doppietta! Steven Odendaal e l’Evan Bros. WorldSSP Yamaha Team trionfano in una complicata Gara
Domenica da incorniciare per l'Evan Bros. #worldssp Yamaha Team e #stevenodendaal, che ancora una volta fanno faville. Dopo il successo in Gara 1 di ieri infatti il pilota sudafricano è riuscito con maestria a conquistare la vittoria anche in Gara 2, nonostante le condizioni completamente mutate a causa della pioggia. Per il team Campione del Mondo in carica si tratta della settima vittoria nelle ultime sette gare disputate sul circuito di Aragon, dal 2019 ad oggi: un dato che lascia poco spazio alle interpretazioni.
Sin dalla mattinata odierna il team ravennate ha dovuto fare i conti con un notevole abbassamento delle temperature, e soprattutto con l'arrivo della pioggia. In queste condizioni per lui del tutto inedite Odendaal ha concluso il warm up in settima posizione, cercando di acquisire il maggior numero di informazioni possibile circa il comportamento della sua Yamaha YZF-R6 sul bagnato.
Come da programma alle 12.30 è andata in scena Gara 2, resa particolarmente complicata dalle condizioni del tracciato, bagnato da una debole ed intermittente pioggia. In queste condizioni difficilmente interpretabili l'Evan Bros. #worldssp Yamaha Team e #stevenodendaal hanno deciso di montare una coppia di gomme intermedie, scelta rivelatasi in seguito corretta.
Allo spegnimento dei semafori Odendaal, scattato terzo per la mancata partecipazione alla gara di Tuuli (2° in griglia) è riuscito a restare sin da subito nelle posizioni di testa, occupando la quarta piazza e cedendo solo in parte il passo ai piloti dotati di pneumatici rain. Con il passare dei giri le prestazioni delle gomme intermedie sono iniziate a progredire, permettendo ad un attento Odendaal di conquistare prima la terza e poi la seconda posizione, durante il decimi dei quindici giri previsti.
Nel corso del giro dodici il numero 4 ha preso la testa della corsa, per poi battagliare con Cluzel e soprattutto De Rosa per mantenerla. Al termine di un ultimo giro un'altra volta da cardiopalma Odendaal ha conquistato il successo, il secondo del weekend ed il suo secondo in assoluto in categoria. Grazie a questa vittoria Steven continua a guidare la classifica generale a punteggio pieno (50 punti), con 19 lunghezze di vantaggio su Aegerter. L'Evan Bros. #worldssp Yamaha Team tornerà in pista già il prossimo fine settimana per il secondo appuntamento della stagione, sul circuito portoghese di Estoril.

Steven Odendaal: "Questo 2021 non poteva iniziare in un modo migliore. La gara è stata complicata, dato che le condizioni dell'asfalto erano davvero difficili da interpretare: all'inizio sono stato passato dai piloti con le gomme da bagnato, ma ho pensato che era il momento di restare calmo, per poi provare magari in seguito a recuperare. Sul finale ho preso qualche rischio di troppo, ma per vincere devi farlo, ed è andata davvero bene. Devo ringraziare il team, che ha saggiamente scelto le gomme intermedie, con le quali non avevo mai corso ma sono riuscito a conquistare questo fantastico successo. Ora possiamo pensare al round di Estoril, dove spero di ottenere altri punti importanti per mantenere la leadership in campionato".
And it's double! #stevenodendaal and the Evan Bros. #worldssp Yamaha Team triumph in a tricky Race 2 at Aragon
The Evan Bros. #worldssp Yamaha Team and #stevenodendaal are once again on a roll. After yesterday's success in Race 1, the South African rider was able to take victory in Race 2, despite the completely different conditions due to the rain. For the reigning World Champion team this is the seventh victory in the last seven races held at the Aragon circuit, from 2019 to today: a figure that leaves little room for interpretation.
Since this morning the team from Ravenna has had to deal with a significant drop in temperatures, and especially with the arrival of rain. In these conditions Odendaal finished the warm up in seventh position, trying to gain as much information as possible about the wet handling of his Yamaha YZF-R6.
As scheduled at 12.30, Race 2 got underway, made particularly complicated by the track conditions, which were wet with intermittent light rain. In these difficult conditions the Evan Bros. #worldssp Yamaha Team and #stevenodendaal decided to run a pair of intermediate tyres, which proved to be the correct choice.
When the lights went out Odendaal, who started third due to Tuuli's (2nd on the grid), non-participation in the race, was able to stay in the leading positions from the start, occupying fourth place and only partially giving way to the riders equipped with rain tyres. With the passing of the laps the performance of the intermediate tyres started to improve, allowing an attentive Odendaal to conquer first the third and then the second position, on the tenth of the fifteen laps planned.
On lap twelve the number four took the lead and then battled with Cluzel and especially De Rosa to keep it. After another heart-stopping final lap Odendaal took the win, his second of the weekend and his second overall in the category. With this win Steven continues to lead the overall standings with full points (50 points), 19 points ahead of Aegerter. The Evan Bros. #worldssp Yamaha Team will be back on track next weekend for the second round of the season, at the Portuguese circuit of Estoril.

Steven Odendaal: "This 2021 could not have started in a better way. The race was complicated, as the asphalt conditions were really difficult to interpret: at the beginning I was passed by riders on wet tyres, but I thought it was time to stay calm, and then maybe try to catch up later. At the end I took a few too many risks, but to win you have to do it, and it went really well. I have to thank the team, who wisely chose the intermediate tyres, with which I had never raced before, but I managed to get this fantastic success. Now we can think about the Estoril round, where I hope to get more important points to keep the leadership in the championship".
