Double World Champions: The Mercedes-EQ Formula E Team's second season in the #abbfiaformulaeworldchampionship was an emotional rollercoaster which reached its climax at the grand finale in Berlin last weekend. A setback in the title fight in the first race on Saturday was followed by a well-deserved reward for all the team's hard work on Sunday, as #nyckdevries and Mercedes-EQ became the first double all-electric World Champions in motorsport history. While #stoffelvandoorne finished the last race of the campaign in the Top Three, a P8 at the chequered flag was enough for his team-mate Nyck to clinch the drivers' World Championship. At the same time, Mercedes-EQ secured the team title with a final tally of 181 championship points. Nyck and Stoffel chalked up three E-Prix wins between them in Season 7, booked pole position on four occasions and made seven podium appearances. The four Mercedes-EQ pole positions were more than was achieved by any of their opponents. In addition to the factory team's three wins, customer outfit Venturi #racing also contributed two victories with their own Mercedes-EQ Silver Arrow 02, making it the most successful car on this year's grid. Season 8 of the #abbfiaformulaeworldchampionship gets underway on the weekend of 28/29 January 2022 in Diriyah.
DTM weekend at the Nürburgring to be contested by nine Mercedes-AMG GT3s: There will be no fewer than nine Mercedes-AMG GT3s entering the fray on the fourth weekend of the 2021 #dtm at the Nürburgring (20 - 22 August). The seven cars contesting the entire season will be joined by two guest entrants on the Eifel circuit.
Mercedes-AMG driver #lucastolz (GER) will be making his #dtm debut in the number 7 car fielded by Mercedes- AMG Team Toksport WRT, while #huberthaupt (GER) will be driving a third Mercedes-AMG for the HRT team of which he is owner and principal. He will be lining up in the number six car alongside regular drivers Maximilian Götz (GER) and #vincentabril (MCO) in the number 4 and number 5 respectively. The career of the veteran from Munich is about to come full circle, as he first competed in the #dtm as a rookie back in 1991. The Nürburgring comeback means that the 52-year-old will have contested #dtm races in three different decades.
The 3.692 km short configuration of the circuit will host two sprint races of 55 minutes plus one lap, one on Saturday and the other on Sunday. After five podium finishes in the six rounds of the #dtm season so far, Mercedes- AMG currently leads the manufacturers' standings.
ABBA #racing extend winning run in GT Cup Championship: In the most recent British GT Cup Championship #event at Silverstone, Team ABBA #racing extended their record haul of wins courtesy of father-son duo Richard and #samneary (both GBR). Sharing the cockpit of the number 88 Mercedes-AMG GT3, they won three of the four races and have established a clear lead in the series' championship standings. ABBA #racing have now delivered a total of 29 race wins with the Mercedes-AMG GT3, more than any other Mercedes-AMG Customer #racing team.
Enduro Motorsport also scored podium successes with the Mercedes-AMG GT4. In the two Saturday races, #marcusclutton and #morgantillbrook (both GBR) in the #66 finished second and third in the GTH class.
Three questions for Hubert Haupt
Hubert Haupt is going back to his #dtm roots this coming weekend. 30 years after making his series debut, the owner of the Haupt #racing Team will be getting back behind the wheel of a #dtm car. The 52-year-old will contest the two races at the Nürburgring in the number 6 car fielded by Mercedes-AMG Team HRT. He spoke to us about what this guest appearance means to him personally and what makes the #dtm so special.
What does the guest start in the #dtm at the Nürburgring mean to you?
Hubert Haupt: "Founding my own team was a long-held ambition, and now another dream is about to come true. To take a seat in the cockpit of a #dtm race again, 30 years after my first race, is a great feeling. For many weeks now, I've been looking forward to driving again in this series, with which I associate so many fond memories. The fact that I'm celebrating my comeback at the Nürburgring, the home track for our team, makes it all the more special."
What sets the #dtm apart from other touring car series?
Hubert Haupt: "On the one hand, the history. Especially when I think back to my first years in the #dtm - that was a great time! Back then, the #dtm was vying with Formula One for popularity. There were 40 cars on the grid, there was a great sense of camaraderie between the drivers, and the whole atmosphere was incredibly relaxed. It was the ultimate in cool motorsport. But even today, the #dtm is one of the best #racing series you can imagine. On paper, almost all of the contestants have a chance of winning. Who comes out on top in the end is decided in tough but fair races where driver skills and team tactics are decisive. That makes it tremendously exciting for the spectators."
What are you hoping to get out of the Nürburgring weekend?
Hubert Haupt: "I'm thrilled about the prospect of going head to head with the younger drivers and the opportunity to prove that I'm not yet over the hill. Our team is exceptionally well prepared and has already proven its capabilities this season with several Top Three finishes. And in the Mercedes-AMG GT3, we have a strong car. All the makings of a decent result are there. However, my main aim is to have fun and to enjoy the great atmosphere in the #dtm as a driver once again."
