Mexico City, here we come: The final triple-header of the Formula One season gets underway this weekend with the Mexico City Grand Prix. The race at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez will be followed in quick succession by the Brazilian Grand Prix at Interlagos on the following weekend and Qatar’s debut on the Grand Prix itinerary one week after that. Mexico City is preparing to host its 21st #f1 race. The inaugural Grand Prix in Mexico City took place in 1963, and it then featured regularly on the calendar until 1970. There was then a prolonged absence, with the fixture eventually returning during the period 1986 to 1992. The first race on the current 4.304 km track took place in 2015, and four more have followed since. Last year’s Mexican Grand Prix had to be cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Amazingly, there are no fewer than five drivers who have won two races each in Mexico City, including Lewis Hamilton (2016 and 2019). The other four members of this illustrious group are Jim Clark, Alain Prost, Nigel Mansell and Max Verstappen – the Dutchman won twice in successive campaigns in Mexico (2017 and 2018). The top spot in the team standings is shared by Lotus, McLaren, Williams and Mercedes, each of them having three victories to their credit. The track record is held by Daniel Ricciardo (Red Bull) with his time of 1:14.759 minutes clocked during the 2018 season. In the same year, Valtteri Bottas (Mercedes) set the fastest race lap so far at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez in a time of 1:18.741 minutes.
Drivers’ and team championships for Mercedes-AMG Motorsport in Russian GT4 series: Capital RT MotorSharks clinched the team championship in the final event of the Russian GT4 Championship season at the Sochi Autodrom. The outfit, which won nine of the 14 races, continued its winning streak on the 5.8km circuit on the Black Sea coast. After finishing fourth in the first race, Denis Remenyako (RUS) driving the number 13 Mercedes-AMG GT4 went on to snatch victory in the subsequent second race from fifth on the grid, a result that handed the 43-year-old the trophy for best driver for the second year in a row. The 2021 runner-up spot went to Remenyako’s team-mate Anton Nemkin (#83), who finished the season with a P2 and a P6. Sergei Stolyarov in the number 44 Yadro Motorsport finished third in the final standings.
