Monaco E-Prix: fantastic fightback from the DS Automobiles drivers!

The most prestigious race of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship took place through the streets of Monaco on Saturday. At the ninth round of Season 9, both, Jean-Éric Vergne and Stoffel Vandoorne starred with two brilliant comeback drives. Thanks to some solid racecraft, the DS PENSKE drivers scored important points in both the drivers’ and teams’ championships.

The day didn’t get off to the best possible start for DS Automobiles and its partner PENSKE AUTOSPORT. Due to a sudden drop in temperature during qualifying, the French team was penalised for having tyre pressures that were too low. As a result, Jean-Eric Vergne and Stoffel Vandoorne were forced to start from the back row of the grid.

Setting off from P22, Jean-Éric Vergne put on a brilliant show around the streets of Monaco. In 29 laps, the Frenchman gained 15 places to finish an excellent seventh overall. JEV pocketed six championship points to keep his title hopes well and truly alive, heading home placed fifth in the drivers’ championship.

Stoffel Vandoorne also climbed up the leaderboard at the Monaco E-Prix. Just like his team mate, he kept up a good pace, blending patience with aggression and opportunism. The reigning world champion started in P21 and took the flag in ninth place, scoring two important points for the team as well.

DS PENSKE is currently fifth in the teams’ standings after the first nine rounds of the season, confirming its prominence at the sharp end of the field. The team will tackle the next two races in Jakarta (Indonesia) from 3-4 June with the goal of making further progress in the title race.

Eugenio Franzetti, DS Performance Director:

“This was a difficult race, but an exciting one at the same time. The penalty we incurred in qualifying meant that we had to start from the back row of the grid with both cars, but our drivers delivered a stunning fightback. On a track that is traditionally hard to overtake on, both our champions got the maximum performance out of the DS E-TENSE FE23. In total, they made up 27 places between them : 15 for JEV and 12 for Stoffel. An incredible showing that allowed the team to score some more points!”

Jean-Éric Vergne, 2018 and 2019 Formula E champion:

“We definitely saved the day by scoring points for seventh place after starting last on the grid. All the more so as we know that finishing in the top 10 in Monaco is difficult enough in the normal order of things. I think we handled the race well. It’s a real shame we got unlucky in qualifying; our aim is to fight for the title so we need to avoid this sort of thing happening. Having said that, the car was very competitive today. We need to stay positive and we will keep giving it everything all the way to the end!”

Stoffel Vandoorne, reigning Formula E champion:

It was a difficult day for us, but it ended pretty well as we managed to score some important championship points. Saturday started off well in free practice: we had a good pace and I felt confident in the car. Unfortunately both our DS E-TENSE FE23 cars had to start from the back row of the grid. That made our job harder during the race, but luckily we could get back into the top 10 by maximising our level of performance to finish ninth. It wasn’t entirely perfect with the Attack Mode, but we can feel satisfied under the circumstances.”

Key figures since DS Automobiles entered Formula E:

  • 98 races
  • 4 championship titles
  • 16 victories
  • 47 podiums
  • 22 pole positions
