Silk Way Rally Second Stage: From Europe to Asia

Comunicato Stampa disponibile solo in lingua originale.

The route connecting two parts of the world brought the competitors to #magnitogorsk.

The second stage of the #silkwayrally literally connected two parts of the world. As the selective section unfolded the caravan of competitors, which started from a bivouac in Ufa, crossed the border between Europe and Asia running along the Ural River.

The competitive distance started right at the foot of the Ural Mountains and led the crews along the border of the Karagay Reserve, a natural monument that spreads over an area of more than 1,800 hectares and is home to rare species of animals and plants.

However, the crews had no time to enjoy the beauty of nature: at high-speed tracks, which were interspersed with more difficult sections, it was not easy to find the right pace and avoid mistakes. And so the results of the stage turned out to be even more unexpected than the day before.

Vasilyev Extends the Lead

For the second day in a row the crew of #vladimirvasilyev and Oleg Uperenko has no equal at the distance – in the overall standings the VRT Team duo turned out to be the fastest again, ahead of the closest rival in the T1 standings — #andreyrudskoy from NG-Energo — by ten minutes. The third time in T1 at the second stage was set by Alexey Ignatov in a GAZelle Next, Bogdan Vavrenyuk and Alexander Rusanov round out the top five.

The second victory in a row allowed Vasilyev to increase the lead over Rudskoy in the overall standings to 16 minutes. At the same time, both crews perform not only in the International #silkwayrally, but also entered the round of the Russian Rally-Raid Championship, which finishes on Sunday, July 9. Thus, before the final day of the battle for the national championship round, #vladimirvasilyev remains the main contender for victory.

G-Drive #racing Crews Lead in SSV

Dmitry Cherkesov overcame the distance the fastest in the SSV standings, however, after the finish the Belgorod crew received a four-minute penalty for violating the speed limit and took the third place at the stage. The winner of the second day is Dmitry Mordkovich from Team Maria Oparina, who lost more than an hour the day before when his car was damaged after driving into a ditch.

The second time on the special stage was set by #anastasianifontova, who took the lead the day before, and now the rider from G-Drive #racing is the first in the SSV classification with a five-minute gap. In addition, the second crew of the team led by #romanrusinov moved up to the second line of the overall standings. However, the debutant of the #silkwayrally is ahead of Sergey Karyakin and Alexey Cherkesov by only a minute.

On the eve of the final day of the Russian Rally-Raid Championship round each of this quartet has a chance to win, while the battle for the White Tiger, the main trophy of the International #silkwayrally, will continue until July 15 and end on Red Square in Moscow.

LADA Sport ROSNEFT Raid Lost the Leadership in Т2

The second stage of the #rally was unsuccessful for the crews in the Niva cars. At the beginning of the special stage Evgeny Sukhovenko ran into a rather large stone, damaged the front wheel and tore off the rear axle. The crew reached the finish line using only three wheels and received a penalty. A little bit later Dmitry Voronov, the winner of the first stage in the T2 standings, hit a stone and damaged the ball joint. Having repaired the car, the crew was able to finish, but with great loss of time.

Anton Melnikov from the Podmoskovye Team was the fastest in the production car standings. Now he is leading the T2 category and his main pursuer is Leonid Petrov from the RUS Team, who is slightly more than six minutes behind.

At the same time, Andrey Sushentsov is the first in the T2 standings of the Russian Rally-Raid Championship round — he is less than two minutes ahead of Melnikov and eight and a half minutes ahead of Petrov. Andrey Dinaburg and Ivan Parysty, as well as Maxatmyrat Danatarov, representing the Federation of automobile sport of Turkmenistan, can also interfere in the fight for the podium.

KAMAZ-Master Counterpunches

The second stage of the #silkwayrally is also remembered for the new battle between KAMAZ-Master and MAZ-SPORTauto. The Russian team managed to seize the initiative from the Belarusian rivals and lead the overall standings. However, even the crews of the Blue Armada could not avoid problems. Alexey Vishneuski, who went to the distance as the leader of the overall standings, was also unlucky: first, the MAZ-SPORTauto crew made a navigational mistake, then lost some time on faults in driving.

At the start of the special stage #dmitrysotnikov, the reigning winner of the #silkwayrally, seized the initiative, but then he made a mistake following in the steps of another crew, drove to the field and faced a pond. Sotnikov failed to get out of the trap on his own, however, thanks to the help of Vitaly Murylev from MAZ-SPORTauto, he was able to return to the track and finish the selective section.

Andrey Karginov was the fastest at the stage. The day before he lost some time due to navigational mistakes — dust from under the wheels of his rivals prevented him from choosing the right road. Nevertheless, #eduardnikolaev is now leading in the overall standings in an updated version of the KAMAZ-Master bonneted sports truck. #sergeyvyazovich, the leader of MAZ-SPORTauto Team, is the second 16 seconds behind. Karginov is the third in the general classification, ahead of Hongning Hou from the Chinese-Russian One Belt One Road crew, as well as Vishneuski, who is 24 minutes behind.

  Pavlenko Leads in G-MOTO

Oleg Pavlenko, a native of #magnitogorsk, overcame the distance of the second stage the fastest among the motorcyclists. He passed the selective section very well, outpaced Dmitry Kalinin, his closest rival in the G-MOTO standings, by almost half an hour and broke into the leaders of the general classification.

According to the results of two stages, Nail Khubbatullin is leading in the #moto standings, he is almost eleven minutes ahead of Ilya Shcheglov, who won the first-ever Silk Way Snow Journey Snowmobile Rally-Raid in winter.

Alexander Gilemov is in the first position of the Quad standings, ahead of Anatoly Kuznetsov, Danil Loginov and Inna Martyanova, who is taking the fourth place.

Quests for Grand Tour Continue

The Small Towns of Russia Grand Tour also continues as part of the International #silkwayrally. At the second stage the competitors visited the start of sports crews and then drove along the route of the 27-kilometer competitive selective section. None of the crews had any major problems with navigation, although some competitors got lost. Punctures caused much more difficulties — there were sharp stones on the track, so many crews had to change tires.

At the end of the distance the crews had to solve the quests prepared by the #rally Organizers again. They all coped with the task, checked at the point in the small town of Verkhneuralsk, and also found the planetary border and a hundred poods weighing piece — a symbol of confidence, reliability and skill, made in 2009 and two years later included in the Russian Book of Records.

Quotes

Vladimir Vasilyev (VRT), "I've got so much pleasure! Today there has been a real classic — #rally segments, many corners, it was cool. And again, there were many spectators — they stood everywhere, at every ford. It inspires much and I want to drive in style! What else is needed? There are roads, spectators — you drive and enjoy."

Andrey Rudskoy (NG-Energo), "There were stones, fast tracks — the average speed was almost a hundred kph! There were many difficult road positions, we wandered five or six times — returned, searched, missed, found. The coolest thing is that rally-raids have never been held here before — the road is not broken, you can rush. There are a lot of fords, and we had to be very careful, especially at the beginning. Once we even hit a stone, but the protection worked. If it had been a little bit to the left or to the right, we would probably have pulled out the lever. I'm glad there are many spectators."

Anastasia Nifontova (G-Drive Racing), "It's a hard day, because it's long. We drove for a long time, it was hot, but not dusty. Nobody caught up with us and we didn't catch up with anyone. At the beginning I was very careful, because there were stones. Sergey Talantsev said that we couldn't leave the track, and it was actually the case. I want to make cuts in the old-fashioned way so as not to swerve, but I forced myself to take care of the vehicle — the #rally is long, if I hurry a little bit, we won't get anywhere. Let's see what the result is."

Roman Rusinov (G-Drive Racing), "It was a very good special stage — thanks to the Organizers. At the very beginning, in the forest with large holes it was necessary to drive very carefully. I wanted to push, but I couldn't. And we were right, we drove well with a good pace thanks to my co-driver. At the last 25 kilometers the rear right wheel was torn — we had to stop and change it, it took three or four minutes. But in general, the pace was good. Once we missed a KAMAZ that caught up with us and had to slow down so as not to drive in its dust. Otherwise, everything turned out quite successfully. There are many days ahead, the most important thing for us is to finish."

Eduard Nikolaev (KAMAZ-Master), "There were almost no promised stones, but there were enough trees — big birches, bushes. Moreover, the second half of the selective section was very slippery and dirty, apparently, it was raining here. In one place the truck twisted, I was afraid it could fall on the side. In general, we were ready for such conditions, but we didn't expect that after such an abnormal heat as yesterday we would encounter such a slippery and muddy track — it was unusual. I saw Sergey (Vyazovich), but decided to let him go and not to take risks. Mechanics will have a lot of work today, there are questions regarding our truck, but they are internal, we're not talking about them now. I think tomorrow we will tune the truck and move on. In a narrow place, we hit a birch bough and broke the windshield."

Sergey Vyazovich (MAZ-SPORTauto), "The start wasn't great, we got into the forest and lost about three minutes to #eduardnikolaev. #alekseyvishneuski made a mistake in navigation at the start. We followed in his steps, but realized that we lost the track earlier, turned around, so he was behind us. As a result, we were the first truck in the field, but I still think that we managed to keep a high pace. The competition is very close, and it's great."

Andrey Karginov (KAMAZ-Master), "It was a good day, thanks to the Organizers. The selective section was live, it can be seen from our condition. A mileage was considerable. Fords did their part and didn't let us relax. There were narrow, winding forest roads where I needed to keep steering, and, of course, working moments when it was necessary to be concentrated at maximum speed. Again, there were dust and heat. Yesterday we lost a lot, so today we've tried to play back. I think today we've set a good time, although we've lost a little bit while overtaking. Large sharp stones didn't allow cutting the trajectory so as not to damage the wheels, and stubs added variety. The landscapes at the liaison were very beautiful, they reminded us of Altai, but we watched them on the go from the cockpit."

Yuri Nayman (URAL): "Today it has been much better than on the first day. We found our pace and drove comfortably, the road was good. The truck didn't let us down. The settings are ideal and everything is fine, in our opinion. We are ready to continue driving. We've passed all today's fords almost at full speed and slowed down only a little bit so that there were beautiful photos — we played to the crowd. There was a small mistake with navigation, but we quickly figured it out."

Aleksey Vishneuski (MAZ-SPORTauto), "It wasn't easy to drive as the first truck. The beginning of the selective section was winding, there was a lot of vegetation, and at the 20th kilometer we made a mistake — at the fork we drove not to the left, but to the right. We made a big loop, when we came back five kilometers later, we saw that #sergeyvyazovich overtook us. Then there were many misses and mistakes both in navigation and in braking points. We let #eduardnikolaev and #dmitrysotnikov through, but the latter didn't have time to slow down in front of the ford and drove into the reeds. And 20 kilometers before the finish line our rear left wheel could not stand any more — it exploded, we had to change it. We reached the finish line, I hope tomorrow the day will pass without incidents."

Dmitry Sotnikov (KAMAZ-Master), "The track was treacherous, the whole day was in the dust, it was difficult — we caught up, overtook, it was impossible to get close. In one place we made a mistake — following somebody's tracks we drove to a field with tall grass and ran into a stream. The wheels sank, we couldn't drive either back or forward. We were waiting for a long time, there was no one, then the crew of Vitaly Murylev in MAZ appeared, they drove up and pulled us out on the third attempt — special thanks to the guys. All the rest was ok."

Oleg Pavlenko, "Today I've rushed so fast — my native land helps me, I know what to expect. I enjoyed riding and the track. The last kilometers I rode to the west, the sun shone in my eyes all the time — it was a little bit uncomfortable. I was catching up with T2, I had to drive some time in the dust, but the guys gave me way. The selective section is live, I even got tired at the end. Navigation was difficult, there were many sharp unexpected corners, somewhere I even had to return to the track. But in general, everything worked well. I liked the selective section. The motorcycle behaved well, I felt it well, I got used to high speed, I often made sure not to exceed it. The navigator doesn't immediately display the speed, so in order not to get penalized, I held back a little bit."
