Mercedes, Tales from the paddock: Quadruple title defence and a return to Qatar

While Mercedes-AMG Customer #racing was securing four titles in the GT World Challenge Europe, the #F1 team was busy preparing for the run-in to the end of the season.

Return of #F1 to Qatar: Lusail, here we come!
This weekend's 17th round of the 2023 #F1 season will be hosted by the Lusail International Circuit. This will be only the second ever Qatar Grand Prix in the history of the series. The first took place in 2021 and was won by Lewis Hamilton from pole position. It will also be the fourth of six sprint race weekends in the current campaign.

The circuit is otherwise mainly used for motorbike #racing, and since the inaugural GP event in 2021, the track has been completely resurfaced and new infrastructure has been put in place. In addition to a new pit area, new team buildings and new access tunnels, changes have also been made to the track, which features 10 right-hand and six left-hand corners.

Customer #racing News: AKKODIS ASP celebrate quadruple title defence in GT World Challenge Europe
At the season finale of the Fanatec GT World Challenge Europe powered by AWS Endurance Cup, the AKKODIS ASP team succeeded in defending all four titles it won last year. A P5 and a P7 in the final Endurance Cup race at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya were enough for the French outfit to clinch the team championship in the Endurance Cup for the second year in succession, and also with one race to spare in the combined overall standings. Timur Boguslavskiy (FIA), Jules Gounon (AND) and Raffaele Marciello (SUI) also won the Endurance Cup drivers' championship by a 27-point margin. Boguslavskiy and Marciello, who additionally share the cockpit of the number 88 Mercedes-AMG GT3 in the Sprint Cup, were also crowned drivers' champions in the overall standings ahead of the finale at Zandvoort in a fortnight's time.
Other Endurance Cup titles: The Winward #racing trio of Miklas Born (SUI), David Schumacher and Marius Zug (both GER) finished the season as runners-up in the Gold Cup driver and team classifications. Haupt Racing's Sébastien Baud (FRA), Hubert Haupt (GER) and Arjun Maini (IND) also lifted two runners'-up trophies in the Bronze Class. Team GetSpeed came third in the team classification. Mercedes-AMG Performance driver Maro Engel (GER), who drove for Team GetSpeed in 2023, finished third in the drivers' classification.

Fanatec Esports GT Pro Series: The season finale of the Fanatec Esports GT Pro Series, which forms part of the supporting programme, had already taken place on Saturday. In the one-hour race on the virtual Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, Alexey Nesov (BUL) finished second in the Silver Cup for Madpanda Motorsport. The four points he scored were enough for the Spanish Customer #racing outfit to secure the 2023 runner-up spot in their class. Winward #racing were similarly placed second in the Gold Cup: Marius Zug (GER) had earlier finished fourth in his class in the virtual #157 Mercedes-AMG GT3.

GT4 European Series: The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya also hosted the season finale of the GT4 European Series at the weekend. Denis Bulatov and Lukas Mayer (both GER) in the number 20 EastSide Motorsport Mercedes-AMG GT4 brought their personal #racing year to a gratifying conclusion with a class podium. The duo finished third in the Pro-AM class on Saturday, which meant that they ended the season fifth in the Pro-AM drivers' standings.
Italian GT Championship: AKM Motorsport took a class win and another class podium in the Italian GT Championship at the Autodromo Internazionale del Mugello. Marco Antonelli (ITA) driving the #12 Mercedes-AMG GT3 ran out winner in the GT3-AM class on Saturday, despite incurring a 60-second penalty for missing the pit stop window. In Sunday's 50-minute race, Georg Kelstrup (DEN) and Gustavo Sandrucci (ITA) in the number 6 sister car took second place in the GT3-PA class, crossing the finish line just 1.254 seconds behind the winners.
