Along the 2024 Silk Way Rally: Novosibirsk Region

Comunicato Stampa disponibile solo in lingua originale.

This year competitors of the International Silk Way Rally will face a unique challenge: for its 15th anniversary the Rally Directorate has prepared the most diverse route in the Project history. It will connect the Russian Federation, Mongolia and the People's Republic of China, and drivers will have to compete in various climatic zones – from permafrost to hot deserts.
The event total distance is about 5,500 kilometers – and traditionally these will be completely new and previously unexplored routes. Every year the Silk Way Rally Marathon Directorate prepares a unique, unforgettable route for the crews – and every time it becomes an exceptional challenge for the world's best drivers and an incredible adventure for amateur crews.
In 2024, the International Silk Way Rally route will again pass through the Novosibirsk Region, where the selective section of the event stage will finish. The crews will arrive here straight from Tomsk, the city that will host the Ceremonial Start of the rally on July 5.
The Novosibirsk Region, located on the West Siberian Plain between the Siberian taiga and the Eurasian steppe, has absorbed the cultural traditions of a wide variety of ethnic groups for thousands of years. The Slavs, Turks and Mongols, medieval Samoyeds and ancient Iranians left their mark here. For many centuries these lands have been a meeting point for different peoples, and the Novosibirsk Region today is a border territory that connects Russia with Kazakhstan, being a bridge of friendship between cultures and peoples.
Officially, the Novosibirsk Region was formed as a modern territorial unit in 1937. During the World War II many enterprises and people were evacuated here, which gave a powerful impetus to the industrial development of the region. In the 1950s, the high level of scientific and technical development of the Novosibirsk Region became one of the most effective engines of the post-war reconstruction of the state.
The region is home to one of the main Russian scientific centers — the world-famous Novosibirsk Akademgorodok (Academic Town). It dates back to 1957 and appeared thanks to the efforts of academicians who proposed organizing a large scientific center in Siberia with institutes in various fields. In just ten years since the creation of the Siberian Branch of the Academy of Sciences, about 1,600 scientists — academicians, doctors and candidates of sciences — have worked at the center, conducting research on more than 500 scientific topics. Science was widely used in practice, in production, and a number of developments in the field of physics, mathematics, chemistry, geological and natural sciences were used with great economic effect.
Today Novosibirsk, the capital of the Novosibirsk Region, is the third largest city in Russia, home to more than 1.6 million people, as well as the largest and most populous city in the Asian part of the country. Founded in 1893, in less than a century and a half it became the administrative and financial center of Siberia. The city is also an important logistics center, and the black and silver belt on the shield of the coat of arms of Novosibirsk symbolizes the Trans-Siberian Railway.
Professional and amateur sports are developed in the region. Hockey is traditionally one of the most popular sports in Siberia. The local club Sibir reached the quarterfinals of the KHL playoff conference in the 2022/23 season. In addition, Novosibirsk is the birthplace of three-time Olympic champion in Greco-Roman wrestling Alexander Karelin and gold medalist of the Rio Games in 2016, fencer Yulia Gavrilova.
Motorsport is also widely represented in the Novosibirsk Region: competitions in autocross, drifting, including winter and night ones, and karting, as well as all-round events are held here. At the same time, motorcycle sports are developing in the region, as well as accessible amateur competitions in various disciplines.
The Novosibirsk Region has already been included in the route of the International Silk Way Rally marathon in 2021. Then the rally bivouac was located on the territory of the Novosibirsk Expo Center International Exhibition Complex, and now the region will host the rally sports route. The experience of participating in the organization and realization of high-level competitions, as well as the brilliant expertise of specialists from municipal executive authorities and their colleagues from emergency services, leaves no doubt that the Silk Way Rally will be held at the highest level, and fans will be treated to a tremendous sports festival, which can be seen literally at arm's length.
Fast facts:
  • The territory of the Novosibirsk Region, small by Siberian standards, is much larger than Belgium, Denmark, the Netherlands and Switzerland combined. The region area is 178 thousand square kilometers and can accommodate Austria and Hungary.
  • The Novosibirsk Zoo, located on the territory of a pine forest, is a unique case among all the parks in the world. It houses one of the world's richest collections of felines and martens. Some species — argali, lion tamarin, takin and others — are no longer kept in any of the Russian zoos.
  • Novosibirsk is the administrative center of the Siberian Federal District and the Novosibirsk Region, the largest municipal entity in Russia (Moscow and St. Petersburg are separate subjects of the Russian Federation and are not municipal entities). It was also included in the Guinness Book of Records as the fastest growing city with a population of over a million, where people of over two dozen nationalities live.
  • The capital of the region has one of the longest straight streets in the world (without turns) — Krasny Prospekt with a length of 6,947 meters, one of the shortest streets in Russia — Sibstroyputi Street with a length of only 40 meters, as well as the longest covered metro bridge in the world. It consists of seven spans, and the components of the bridge have special rollers, due to which it becomes movable. Officially, its length is 2,145 meters, but due to temperature changes and its moving nature, the length of the bridge can vary by up to half a meter.
  • Siberians have their own Ob Sea. Local residents call the Novosibirsk Reservoir on the Ob River the Ob Sea, which arose after the completion of the construction of the Novosibirsk hydroelectric power station dam.
