CUPRA EKS aims to continue the winning streak in the 2022 FIA ETCR at Zolder

Comunicato Stampa disponibile solo in lingua originale.

  • Victory on the first three rounds gives #cupra EKS a strong 172-point lead in the 2022 FIA ETCR eTouring Car World Cup
  • CUPRA EKS driver and defending ETCR champion Mattias Ekström leads the drivers’ category, having been King of the Weekend twice
  • Team-mate #adrientambay is the only driver to win all of his SuperFinals this year and is second in the drivers’ standings
  • Both Jordi Gené and #tomblomqvist have finished on the overall ETCR podium this year and aim for more all-electric success in Belgium

CUPRA goes into the fourth round of the #2022fiaetcretouringcarworldcup at #zolder (8-10 July), leading the manufacturers’ category by 172 points, while the #cupraeksracing drivers will be aiming to continue their domination of the series – having been crowned King of the Weekend in all three races so far this year.

Mattias Ekström tops the drivers’ points table, as he’s already been crowned King of the Weekend twice (in France and last time out in Spain). The Swedish driver is on great form and is certainly driving to his mantra of ‘go hard or go home’.

In an extraordinary start to his all-electric ETCR career, #adrientambay is the only driver to win all three of his DHL SuperFinal races this season – and was crowned King of the Weekend in only his second ETCR race meeting in Hungary. The Frenchman is also in scintillating form and arrives in Belgium second in the drivers’ standings, just six points behind Ekström.

Fellow all-eclectric newcomer #tomblomqvist has also settled into the #cupraeksracing team well. The British-born Swede has twice finished second in his DHL SuperFinal (in France and Hungary) and has been on the overall ETCR race weekend podium as well. With experience of both the #cupra e-Racer and the unique ETCR race format now under his belt, Blomqvist, who is sixth in the drivers’ standings, will be looking for his best finish of the year in Belgium.

Jordi Gené shot from 11th to seventh in the drivers’ standings after an outstanding drive at Jarama last time out, where the Spanish driver finished second in his DHL SuperFinal to celebrate his first race weekend ETCR podium result. He has raced touring cars at #zolder before, but not the most powerful all-electric #cupra e-Racer!

The 4km #zolder track, which is also known as the Circuit Terlamen, was opened 59 years ago and since 1963 has held an enormous number of top-level races – including the Belgian F1 Grand Prix 10 times. This will be the first time that the famous circuit has held an all-electric motorsport event, with the Circuit #zolder Electrified EV Show taking place in the paddock and on track. Located near the city of Hasselt, the fast and twisty clockwise #zolder track is the perfect venue for touring car #racing, with its 11-corner configuration featuring fast straights, challenging turns and chicanes which demand pin-point accuracy.

The same weekend as the ETCR race at #zolder, #cupra is #racing at the Extreme E double-header event in Sardinia.

DID YOU KNOW?

The FIA ETCR eTouring Car World Cup features a unique and pioneering start procedure.

In Quarter Finals and Semi Final races, three cars line up one beside each other in a nine-metre high and 24 metre wide Starting Gate. Instead of lights going out to indicate the start of the race, the Starting Gate lights up green and lifts to unleash the all-electric cars. The race to the first corner has begun!

For the Pool Fast and Pool Furious DHL SuperFinals, six cars line up in a more traditional staggered starting grid position, with the pole sitter and second qualifier on the first row of the grid and the next four cars lining up behind on rows two and three. The lights go out and the SuperFinal is underway!

Races are kept to a maximum of 20 minutes to avoid the need for any energy-saving management – so it’s just flat-out #racing from start to finish.

During each session a predetermined set amount of Power Up boost is available, which takes the cars from 300kW to the full 500kW of power.

It’s up to the driver when to strategically deploy the Power Up boost, and the track configuration and the position in the race – and whether the driver needs to defend or attack – are contributing factors as to when best to utilise the extra power.
